Eat the characteristic local cuisine in a neighborhood trattoria? And hear interesting current and historical tidbits that make Rome and Florence come alive as you take it all in?
In Rome, we will experience three thousand years of history -- from the Ancient through the Medieval, and on to the Renaissance and the Baroque -- sprinkled with lively impressions about the fashionable, alluring Romans during two, expert commentated walks through Roman history and sites during our stay in Rome. Many "must see" sites in Rome, and we will take time to explore the Vatican Museum featuring the Tapestry Gallery, the Maps Room and the Sistine Chapel. We will also visit St. Peter’s Basilica and the Coliseum. For those of you who have read Dan Borwn’s Angels and Demons, believed to be an engaging read, there will be an optional afternoon walking tour for those interested of the highlights from this masterpiece. Following our stay in Rome, we will head north to one of the Roman Empire’s former colonies, the beautiful city of Florence. Florence is called the capital of arts; according to statistics produced by UNESCO, 60% of the world's most important works of art are located in Italy and approximately half of these are in Florence. During our expert commentated historical tour of the city, our guide will help us decipher the history of Italy’s frescos and Cathedral Art. No stay in Florence is complete without shopping in the "haut couture" district and on the Ponte Vecchio. We will also discover the Tuscan countryside during a guided tour of the local market and town of Siena and by participating in a cooking class in a local Chianti village at the Lorenza di Medici Culinary School. There will be time throughout the trip for independent exploration, shopping and pursuing personal interests.
