PASSPORT AND VISAS Citizens of the United States must possess a valid U.S. passport for travel to Vietnam and Cambodia. It must be valid for 6 months beyond your intended stay in both countries and have 2-4 completely empty pages facing each other.

  • If you do not have a passport, APPLY NOW! Please do not wait until the last minute. You should always carry 2 extra passport photographs with you, in case of emergency (if your passport/visa is lost or stolen).
U.S. citizens need to obtain a visa in advance for travel to Vietnam.
  • There are two methods of applying for a visa from Vietnam: applying through a Vietnamese Embassy and applying for visa on arrival. Please note that, in order to obtain a visa on arrival, the traveller needs to apply for an invitation letter before the date of travel. ROAM guests will receive the invitation letter when they book their tour and therefore can obtain their Vietnam visa on arrival. If you wish to obtain your visa in advance, please click the following link to apply online, http://www.myvietnamvisa.com/visa-requirements/united-states.html.
  • There are two methods of applying for a visa from Cambodia: applying through a Cambodian Embassy and applying for visa on arrival. Most travellers find visa on arrival to be the most convenient option.

VACCINATIONS - There are no mandatory immunizations required for US residents visiting Vietnam and Cambodia. However, please consult with your personal physician, local health department, travel clinic, or immunization center about any vaccinations you may need to update (tetanus, typhoid, polio, Hepatitis A & B), or others that may be personally recommended for you based on your age, health, and past vaccination history. Anti-malaria medication is recommended.

Your Physical Condition: Although this adventure is rated as easy to moderate in general, travelers should be in good physical health.

Health Insurance: You MUST have your own health insurance, and have no physical problems or conditions that would be adversely affected by riding across bumpy roads!

ELECTRICITY Electricity: 220V / 50V. However, electricity supply can be unreliable in smaller towns.

WATER AND FOOD - As with most underdeveloped countries, stomach upsets and diarrhea are a common problem and can ruin a visit. Most problems stem from contaminated water. Unless it has been thoroughly boiled, do not drink tap water. You should also avoid ice in drinks, especially in the countryside. Imported bottled water is available in most cities, but beware of bottles that have been refilled with tap water. Soft drinks and alcoholic beverages are fine and in hotels you can use the hot water in your room to make Chinese tea. You should have no problems with thoroughly cooked food, but stay clear of anything that looks like it has been reheated from a previous meal. Take care with seafood and avoid undercooked meat. Only eat fruit that you have peeled yourself, and salads should be avoided.

CURRENCY, CREDIT CARDS, GRATUITIES
The currency of Vietnam is the dong. All goods and services can and should be paid for in dong. Exceptions are made in hotels and when buying international air tickets. Shops and restaurants in the bigger cities will also accept US dollars, but you should be aware of the fact that usually a lower exchange rate will be used. It is therefore advisable to change a certain amount of Vietnamese dong to cover your day-to-day expenses. Travellers cheques must be denominated in US dollars. You can change them to dong or to US dollars (with a 2 percent commission). Those issued by American Express, Bank of America, Citicorp, First National City Bank, Thomas Cook, and Visa are accepted. They are also accepted at major tourist hotels, but not in most shops. Vietnam is still very much a cash economy. Credit Cards -Visa, Mastercard and - with exceptions - American Express are accepted in virtually every hotel in major cities throughout the country, as well as in upmarket restaurants, especially in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The Cambodian currency is called Riel (KHR). However, most Cambodians use US dollars as well as their own currency. Even the littlest shops quote prices in US dollars. There are no ATMs in Cambodia, and the use of credit cards is not widespread. Travelers' cheques are difficult to exchange outside Siem Reap. Although cash advances on credit cards are available in Siem Reap, associated fees are high.

For Tips/Gratuities, as noted above ALL tips/gratuities are included in the trip price. You are welcome to offer an additional gratuity to our guides, drivers, porters; however, this is not required.

Returning U.S. residents are allowed to bring back $800 worth of merchandise, duty free.
